ONA Coffee (Fiji), a specialty coffee company owned by Australia’s ONA Coffee, is working to grow Fiji’s coffee industry by partnering with local farmers and promoting sustainability. The company is focusing on wild coffee varieties that naturally grow in Fiji’s forests, aiming to turn a rare product into a source of income for rural communities.
Since registering in Fiji in late 2024, ONA Coffee has partnered with 31 farmers in the Ra Province. These farmers already have wild coffee plants growing on their land. ONA is currently sourcing two of the four coffee species found in Fiji—Arabica and Liberica—and plans to eventually grow over 500 acres of premium coffee in the country’s western region.
“Our vision is to empower the people here through coffee,” said Maheer Prasad, Chief Executive Officer of ONA Coffee in Fiji.
“Many farmers already have wild coffee in their forests. Our role is to help them identify it, pick it at the right time, and make sure they earn money by selling it directly to us. When we started, a big first step was simply teaching people to recognize the coffee growing around them,” Prasad explained.
Beyond economic development, the initiative also encourages forest protection. By valuing the native environment and creating jobs, ONA Coffee hopes to support both people and the planet.
