New Vietnamese Coffee Shops and Bagels, Plus a Food History Event in NYC

New York’s Vietnamese coffee scene continues to grow, fueled by roasters like Nguyen Coffee Supply (who launched a pop-up café a few years ago). New spots include:

  • Larry’s Ca Phe in East Williamsburg
  • Lê Phin in the East Village

FifthSip opening May 17 in Nolita (229 Mott Street), serving traditional drinks like egg coffee, coffee with condensed milk, and innovative options featuring sea salt foam and pandan.

Also coming later this year to Williamsburg is Kinhfolk (710 Metropolitan Avenue), which will source beans from Philadelphia’s Càphê Roasters — their first New York wholesale client.

Utopia Bagels Expands to Long Island City

Queens’ beloved bagel chain Utopia Bagels is opening a third location at 26-11 Jackson Avenue on May 18. The new spot offers more dine-in seating and features an arcade game. Utopia, founded in Whitestone in 1981, opened their Manhattan location in 2024. Co-owner Jesse Spellman said returning to Queens honors their roots.

Museum of Food and Drink Hosts Cultural Food History Panel

On May 22, the Museum of Food and Drink in Brooklyn hosts an adults-only panel, Eating Breakfast Like it’s 1774, featuring co-editors KC Hysmith and Justine Orlovsky-Schnitzler, alongside baker Lauren Dozier. The discussion explores food history through the lens of dolls, with cookies made for the event. Dolls are welcome! Tickets are $25, or $50 with a copy of An American Girl Anthology, which grants access to the museum’s “Flavor” exhibit.
